"Find Your Happy Place"
We left off last season with Charlie finding out that not only is Rachel Seybolt, the daughter of his former partner, alive. But the person responsible for hiding her all of these years is the father of her current partner. Remembering that Charlie spent 12 years in prison for his former partner's murder. He was exonerated and given $50 million and went back to work as a detective to solve the crime for which he did the time.
This season has us "at the river" staring into an open foot locker with a beautiful dead body in it. Yes, when you die of heat in a box, you look gorgeous. When they remove the body they discover the number one stenciled on the bottom.
The next scene has them on a freeway staring at an identical foot locker. Another body, this one a man, with the number two stenciled on the bottom. They get another call which takes them to the roof of a building, staring at another foot locker.....
They find another beautiful girl inside along with the number three. They open her wallet, find cash, a driver's license, and a business card.
They go to the business on the card, a shipping depot type place. Charlie asks the clerk what he can put in a box, to which the clerk replies, "whatever you want." Charlie then pulls fruit out of his pocket, a kumquat, and asks if he has a box for that. Of course we know that Charlie loves his fruit, having been denied it while in prison. They go over some other possibilities of what you can put in a box. Charlie asks if he has a box big enough to hold a man, his partner chimes in, "or a woman." This freaks the clerk out, and then they reveal that they are detectives. And they find out that victim number three usually runs the counter.
The next scene is in an office building, they are talking to the widow of victim number two. They try to determine if he had any connection to the other two victims.
The first victim, was an immigrant. They are about to go and investigate when a man owning a luggage store comes in and announces that a man had come in earlier and bought 10 trunks like he'd seen on the news.
The first victim apparently was a stripper, who worked in a place where the dancers dance in boxes. The other dancers cannot think of anyone who enjoyed the boxes more than anyone else. They explained that she was happy for no reason. The other dancers said she'd just gotten a line in a movie "I've never seen a sky that blue."
The detectives get a text, the new boss, (played by Donal Logue) wants to see them. They report that they cannot find a commonality between the victims. The new boss says "so it's random?"
To which Charlie replies, "except nothing is random."
"why is that?"
"Because it is all connected."
Charlie walks out after saying maybe it's not who they were, but where.
Charlie comes and pounds on the window for Reese to come and check out what he's found. The last two victims had cars with GPS, and the only place their lives intersected was a park. Crews and Reese go and check it out.
While they are there the notice an ice cream truck. They go and talk to the guy, while Charlie is asking about which kind of fruit they might have in their ice creams Reese asks him if he's alright, he looks a little shaky. He starts to mumble out some answer, and Charlie says "I don't know what your friend on the floor is planning to do, but I'm going to count to three and then I'm going to shoot him." The bad guy on the floor has a shot gun pointed at Charlie through the wall of the truck, and Charlie has a gun pointed at the bad guy. We fade to commercial and hear a gunshot.
We come back from commercial, Reese is eating icecream and there is a man being loaded into an ambulance, screaming "you didn't count to three." They were selling crack out of the ice cream truck, happened to be in a school zone. They couldn't have committed the murders because they had just been released that morning.
In the public restroom, we see Crews trying to catch up on lost time, the bathrooms have had installed laser faucets, and apparently he's sold his soul to Milhouse for a buck, because he can't get them to work. A woman from the park identifies victims two and three as people who were at the park last week. Victim three was taking a picture of victim two. She had noticed because guys without kids in parks stand out.
Crews and Reese are discussing the possibilities of the two having an affair and the wife finding out and killing them both, adding in the stripper because the guy had likely visited there. They cannot find the wife, but the building security says she's at the office. Crews and Reese go and check it out and hear a woman in the office saying she'd "do anything you want." Guns drawn, Crews and Reese the wife having a little fun with a girl.
The wife reveals that they were splitting for obvious reasons, and that victim number two was moving to London. He was going to make a new start and try to be happy.
We then see another trunk being left at LAX. Inside is a high school senior who had just gotten a full ride scholarship to run track.
Crews realizes that all of the victims were about to be happy. He also realizes that when people are happy they want to announce it, so back to the box store, they do announcements. The clerk can't find their customer list. So Crews and Reese go and see if any of the friends and family had gotten happy announcements from the victims. Sure enough,
They get a warrant to search the clerks apartment, who lives above his mother. They get her to let them in, and inside it is set up for a birthday party for a kid. There are invitations on the table, one for each of the victims. There is another invitation for a wedding. They go back to the box shop and break through the door, in the back they find another foot locker. Inside is the clerk with a bag over his head. They notice a missing ceiling tile. Crews goes up into the attic to find four more boxes. Along with the ones the victims were in there are nine trunks accounted for.
Next scene is a woman crying, the wedding is tomorrow and they can't find their daughter. The clerk is in the interview room, he won't tell them where the girl is because the thought of her in the trunk is the only thing that makes him happy. They bring in his mom to get some answers. He's a freak, he tells his mom it's ok it's one big smile. Crews turns over the box of party favors and finds a map with a happy face drawn on it. They find the girl on one end of the happy face of the map.
With that crime solved, Crews goes to the prison to speak to the man who had killed Crews' partner and family. He'd been raising their daughter as his own. Said the Lord had told him to do it.
Crews leaves the prison and goes to a Hostel that Rachel had been seen leaving several days ago. The guy who ran the Hostel claims that no Americans ever stay there. Crews and his accountant, who had spent time in jail too, discussed that the room they were in were smaller than the others, they notice the floor is dinged up under one of the beds, they move the bed to find a hidden room, in the room they find Rachel. Rachel is freaked, Crews tells her to calm down, the "fire sent me to get you." She immediately calms down, he picks her up and walks her out of the Hostel. He tells his accountant to shoot anyone that tries to stop them.
